Oscars 2025: Indians Shabana Azmi, Rama’s wife, SS Rajamouli, and others are invited to join the Academy
The Academy has also extended invitations to Ritesh Sidhwani and other Indians to join.
New Delhi: Notable Indian celebrities including SS Rajamouli, Shabana Azmi, Rama Rajamouli, Ritesh Sidhwani, and others have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as 487 new members for the Class of 2024. Nineteen of the 71 Oscar nominees who have been invited are winners. Additionally invited are director Rima Das, choreographer Prem Rakshith for Naatu Naatu, and cinematographer Ravi Varman. Over 9,000 of the invitees will be able to vote, bringing the Academy’s total membership to 10,910 if everyone accepts the invitations.
According to a news release from The Academy, the Class of 2024 has 44% women, 41% members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and representatives from 56 non-US countries and territories.
Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy, and Janet Yang, President, shared their excitement by saying, “We are ecstatic to welcome the new class of Academy members for this year.” The global film community has been greatly impacted by these extraordinarily gifted professionals and artists.”
Upon accepting membership, those who have been invited to several branches will have to choose one.
On the work front, SS Rajamouli’s next directorial project features superstar Mahesh Babu in the lead role and is said to be a jungle adventure. He also directed RRR which created history by winning the Best Original Song for its track Naatu Naatu at the Oscars 2023. The film starred Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn.
Shabana Azmi, on the other hand, was last spotted in Ghoomer. In addition, she starred in the 2023 motion picture Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. In addition to Jaya Bachchan and Dharmendra, the film’s lead actors were Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh.
