NEW DELHI: On the first day of the pink-ball second Test match against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Friday, Shubman Gill’s encouraging comeback to the Indian Test team was cut short. After missing the Perth Test due to injury, Gill made a strong comeback. However, India had a shaky first session and he was defeated by his arch-enemy, Scott Boland.
With a strong 69-run partnership for the second wicket, Gill and KL Rahul steadied India after Mitchell Starc had dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck on the opening delivery of the game. Before Rahul’s dismissal for 37 runs late in the session caused a mini-collapse, the two appeared at ease under the lights.

Boland trapped Gill leg-before after he struck 31 off 51 balls with five boundaries. Boland, who has now removed the Indian hitter three times in consecutive innings while giving up only 10 runs in 28 deliveries, continued to dominate him with this dismissal.
The supremacy of Boland over Gill
Boland has an impressive record against Gill, averaging just 3.33 against the Indian batsman. In terms of average against Gill, he is now the most effective bowler.
India’s difficulties in Adelaide
The collapse that saw India lose three wickets in 16 balls began with Rahul’s dismissal. Soon after, Virat Kohli came on, and at the end of the first session, India was at 82/4 after Gill was dismissed.
Mitchell Starc (6/48) took six wickets for the hosts, ultimately leading to India’s dismissal for 180 in the second session. Australia’s wickets included Scott Boland (2/54) and captain Pat Cummins (2/41).
With a rapid 42 from 54 balls, including three sixes and three fours, Nitish Reddy led the Indian batsmen in scoring. Late in the innings, Ashwin also helped with a run-a-ball of 22.
Even though the Adelaide surface helped the Australian bowlers, Gill’s stroke play and combination with Rahul showed glimpses of his class until his dismissal.
